We are seeking a skilled and experienced Medium Unix Engineer to join our IT operations team. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience managing Unix-based systems, providing technical leadership, and ensuring the optimal performance, stability, and security of our infrastructure. This role involves both hands-on administration and mentoring junior team members, contributing to the design and execution of system architecture, troubleshooting, and managing critical systems in a high-availability environment.
This position also includes participating in on-call rotations and contributing to proactive and reactive IT activities to maintain a robust and resilient infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- System Administration: Install, configure, and maintain Unix/Linux servers and related software. Ensure optimal system performance and troubleshoot issues related to security, performance, and application integration.
- Infrastructure Management: Manage large-scale Unix environments, automating tasks using shell scripting, Ansible, Puppet, or similar tools.
- Performance Tuning: Monitor system performance, analyze logs, and use various monitoring tools to ensure uptime, speed, and availability of systems.
- Security Management: Implement and enforce security best practices, perform system audits, and ensure compliance with internal and external security policies. Handle patch management and vulnerability remediation.
- Support & Troubleshooting: Respond to critical issues or outages, using advanced troubleshooting skills to restore services quickly. Manage priorities in a fast-paced environment while ensuring SLAs are consistently met.
- Automation & Scripting: Develop and maintain scripts to automate regular tasks and system configuration changes, improving operational efficiency.
- Documentation: Maintain clear documentation for system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting processes. Prepare and maintain system logs, incident reports, and support documentation.
- Collaboration & Communication: Work closely with other IT teams (networking, security, development) to support projects and initiatives. Act as a key player in cross-functional teams to deliver timely solutions. Familiarity with hardware maintenance, vendor ticket management, and escalation processes.
Technical Skills & Certifications
- Operating Systems: Extensive experience with RedHat Linux (versions 6, 7, 8, and 9).
- Automation Tools: Proficiency in Ansible for automation and RedHat Satellite for configuration management.
- Protocols and Services: In-depth knowledge of NTP and DNS configuration and troubleshooting.
- ITIL Framework: Understanding and practical experience with ITIL processes (incident, change, and problem management).
- Preferred Certifications:
- Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) or Red Hat Certified Specialist
- ITIL Foundation Certification
Key Activities (Proactive & Reactive)
Proactive Activities:
- Automate routine tasks using tools like Ansible to improve efficiency and reduce human error.
- Conduct regular system health checks, performance tuning, and capacity planning.
- Implement and maintain monitoring tools to detect potential issues before they impact operations.
- Collaborate with vendors for hardware maintenance and ensure compliance with support agreements.
- Keep systems up-to-date with patches and upgrades, ensuring security compliance.
Reactive Activities:
- Troubleshoot and resolve incidents in a timely manner, performing root cause analysis to prevent recurrence.
- Respond to on-call requests during off-hours to address critical issues.
- Manage and resolve vendor-related tickets for hardware and software issues.
- Participate in the change management process, ensuring successful implementation with minimal downtime.
- Address service requests and ensure timely resolution while maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent work experience).
- 10+ years of experience in Unix/Linux system administration, preferably with a focus on high-availability systems.
- Expertise in Unix-based operating systems (AIX, HP-UX, Solaris, or Linux).
- Proficiency in shell scripting (Bash, KornShell, etc.) and automation tools (Ansible, Puppet, Chef, etc.).
- Strong understanding of system security practices, user authentication, and file system management.
- In-depth knowledge of network protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, NFS, HTTP, etc.) and system services (SSH, NTP, SMTP).
- Experience with performance monitoring and system diagnostic tools.
- Experience with virtualization technologies (VMware, KVM, etc.) and cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, etc.) is a plus.
- Availability to participate in on-call rotations.
